I thought I had kindergarten snacks figured out. I was sending fruit every day, feeling pretty good about my mom game.
Then I found out my daughter had been telling her teacher she “forgot her snack” so she could get chips.
Clearly, my strawberries weren’t winning. 😂
Instead of turning snack time into a battle, we made a deal. She gets a “fun snack” from an approved list, plus a fruit or vegetable—and she has to eat both.
It’s been a surprisingly easy compromise. She gets something she actually looks forward to, and I feel better knowing she’s getting something a little more substantial than chips.
And bonus: most of these are also great snacks to throw in my bag for travel days.
Our Favorite “Fun Snacks”
These are the snacks currently making the cut in our house:
- LesserEvil Space Balls: Crunchy and definitely feels like a fun snack.
- Wilde Protein Crackers: Perfect if your kid is a cracker fan.
- Tosi Crispy Protein Puffs: Light, crunchy, and easy to pack.
- Kindling Power Twists: A fun option my daughter actually enjoys.
- O Bean Edamame: One of my go-to options when I want something more filling.
- Yoggies: Definitely feels more like a treat to her.
- Nuts: Easy, filling, and perfect for travel. (Just check your school’s allergy policy first.)
I pair one of these with a fruit or vegetable—berries, grapes, apples, cucumbers, carrots, whatever she’ll actually eat that day.

The Formula That Works for Us
1 fun snack + 1 fruit or vegetable = snack time.
I’m not trying to make every snack perfectly healthy. I’m trying to find the middle ground between what I want her to eat and what she will actually eat.
Honestly, that’s been a much better strategy.
Why I Pack These for Travel Too
These aren’t just kindergarten snacks. They’re also the kinds of things I like having on hand for airport days, road trips, hotel stays, and long days out with the kids.
Because I’ve learned the hard way that hungry kids + travel = trouble.
I’d much rather throw a few snacks I know they’ll actually eat into my bag than end up buying whatever is available when everyone suddenly announces they’re starving.
And yes, sometimes that might still be chips.
I’m a realist. 😂.
