I thought I had kindergarten lunch figured out.
When I shared my kindergarten shopping list, I felt completely prepared. I bought the gear, stocked the pantry, and felt ready for day one.
Then kindergarten actually started.
I quickly realized that the lunchbox that seemed perfect before school wasn’t necessarily the best one for a five-year-old to carry, open, and manage on her own.
So during the first two weeks of school, we tried five different lunchboxes.
And I completely changed my mind.
This is a real-life, two-week review from a first-time kindergarten mom—not a 180-day durability test. I’ll update this post as we get further into the school year.
The Biggest Thing I Got Wrong
I thought my daughter needed a lunchbox with a million compartments.
She doesn’t.
When I give her too many choices, she takes a tiny bite of everything and comes home with half her lunch untouched. Plus, her school has a completely separate morning snack time so she is not as hungry as I thought she would be by lunchtime.
Her lunchbox really only needs to hold… actual lunch.
For us, that’s usually:
One main dish + a fruit or vegetable.
Once I figured that out, my priorities changed:
- Light enough for a five-year-old to carry
- Easy for little hands to open
- Enough room without unnecessary bulk
- Easy to wash without a million pieces

1. Bentgo Kids Stainless Steel
The one I originally bought.
I still think this is a good lunchbox. It’s sturdy, and the compartments are great if your child likes a lot of variety.
The problem was that my daughter wasn’t using most of them.
And once she started carrying it back and forth to school every day, the extra weight and bulk became something I couldn’t ignore.
Our verdict: A great option if your child uses the compartments. For us, it was simply more lunchbox than we needed.
2. Pawtong Bento Box with 4 compartments
This one gives you a lot of flexibility with its adjustable dividers.
If you have an older child who eats larger, more varied meals, I can see why you’d love it.
For us, though, there were just more pieces to wash, dry, and keep track of every night.
And I’ve learned that with kindergarten, anything that creates one more thing for me to remember at 8 p.m. probably isn’t going to be my favorite.
Our verdict: Great flexibility, but too much for our simple lunches.
3. OmieBox insulated kids lunch box
If your child loves hot lunches, this one makes a lot of sense.
The built-in insulated container lets you pack something warm alongside cold food, which is genuinely clever.
But that insulation also makes it bigger and heavier.
Since my daughter prefers cold lunches right now, I didn’t want her carrying around the extra weight for a feature we weren’t using.
Our verdict: I’d consider this first for a child who needs warm lunches. For ours, it wasn’t necessary.
4. Simple Modern Disney Princess with 3 compartments
This was my daughter’s favorite.
Not because of the compartments or the construction.
Because of the princesses.
And honestly, that matters.
If a favorite character makes your child excited to take their lunch to school, that’s a win in my book.
It’s lightweight, affordable, and fun. I personally preferred the feel of stainless steel for something we’re using every school day, but I can absolutely see why this one would be a favorite with kids.
Our verdict: A fun, affordable choice, especially if the design gets your child excited about lunch.
🏆 5. Our Winner: Innobaby Stainless Steel Bento 19 oz
This is the one we’re keeping.
The Innobaby ended up being the best fit for what my daughter actually needs right now.
It’s lightweight and compact, and it holds the amount of food she actually eats without giving me a bunch of empty compartments to fill just because they’re there.
But the biggest thing for me?
She can open it herself.
That matters when you’re sending a five-year-old into a loud cafeteria and expecting her to manage her own lunch.
And when she brings it home, I’m not staring at a pile of tiny pieces in the sink.
It’s just simple.
And right now, simple wins in our house.
So, Would I Still Buy the Bentgo?
Probably not for kindergarten.
Not because it’s a bad lunchbox. It just isn’t the right fit for my daughter right now.
Kindergarten has already taught me that the product with the most features isn’t necessarily the product that makes our day easier.
She needs a lunchbox she can carry, open herself, and fill with food she’ll actually eat.
Two weeks into school, that’s the Innobaby for us.
